Rob Ryan

‘The Braintree’

Rob took part in a group show at the Higgins in Bedford  entitled ‘Edward Bawden And Me’, curated by Christopher Brown.

‘I love Bawden’s work, his line, his use of colour but mainly his sense of fun ! He loved both visual and literal punnery and my contribution to the show (pictured here) pays homage to that side of his art. Bawden is from Braintree in Essex, a place name I always thought hilarious and I used to fantasise that there really was a giant brain tree there that could answer any question asked of it, a notion I used to often share with original Essex girl and Ryantown studio designer Miss Liberty Wright. I don’t know if this is true or not. Bawden also created lots of public transport travel posters and this silly picture also makes reference to that’.
